[SOLVED] Installation: found ISO9660 FS but no or wrong proxmox cd-id, skipping

Dear All,

brand new to the virtualisation topic and especially ProxMox...
And already at installation I have a strange issue.

I downloaded the Proxmox 8.4 VE Installer ISO,
used Etcher on Windows to burn it to an USB stick.

When I boot from the stick I get the message:
found ISO9660 FS but no or wrong proxmox cd-id, skipping
It seems it is only skipping certain entries, since it continoues the process,
but does not show my SSD to install ProxMox to.

So I could install to different disks, but not to my SSD...
(I do not want to use the offered data disks for it)

Any idea what to do?
Perhaps I have to use the Debian Workaround...

This is indeed odd behavior. What is currently on that SSD? My suspicion is that in fact you are not booting from the USB - but in fact you already wrote that ISO to the SSD itself. This would explain why Proxmox is ignoring this disk.

How is that SSD connected to the server?
What HW are you using for the install?
Are you sure that it is an SSD & not an eMMC? (AFAIK Proxmox won't allow an install to eMMC).


Things I would try:

1. Completely wipe that SSD.
2. Reburn that ISO to a working USB flash drive.
3. Make sure in the bios that you can boot from that USB flash drive.
4. Try a different USB port for the flash drive.
5. Disconnect that SSD & try booting again from the USB flash drive - do you still get any "found ISO9660 FS but ....." errors?

Thanks, for your response.

I found the "special setting" to start with debug mode.
Obviously the error message is not related to the fact that
the installer ignores the disk.

I thought the SSD is empty, but given your feedback,
I will follow the steps you mentioned and double check.

Update:
I had an empty exFat Partition on the SSD.
In addition I had used this SSD as a ubuntu 24.04 startdisk earlier.
I do not know what has caused the problem.

I wrote a completley new Partitionetabel onto the SSD.

Now the SSD is recognized, installation works.

As I thought, this is the reason that SSD was recognized as an installer disk.
