I have a q35 VM because I plan on adding NVIDIA GPUS (for AI, not for video), but if I do so, "vmware compatible" as the "display" doesnt work (console vnc is stuck at "listening on systemd-rfkill.socket" and if I close and reopen console, it sometimes fails to load vnc all together. This makes it so I cant proceed with the ubuntu install

Why not use SPICE/qxl which works great with Linux/Ubuntu (preferably with a SPICE client viewer). Or use any other display like Standard VGA or VirtIO-GPU? Why does it have to be "vmware compatible".

because I cant even install ubuntu yet in the VM since I cant ssh into it. In the past, I used "vm ware compatible" per youtube videos, and it worked.

You don't need to install Ubuntu first. Try SPICE(qxl) as recent Ubuntu installers have support for it. Or otherwise use Standard VGA for Display in the VM Settings. Recent Ubuntu installers should also support VirtIO-GPU. No reason to keep being stuck on VMware Compatible.

Something was wrong with my computer as even direct installs without proxmox kept failing, so I bought another computer and that one works now, including console vnc in proxmox like it did before.
