I have been asked to help a friend whose company is setting up a system of proxmox servers for a customer, these are all on paid up licences. However their Sysadmin left suddenly with only half the system installed.
I have been asked to help set up the rest. I last used proxmox about 10 years ago so thought I'd set up a small system at home to refamiliarise myself with the system. I download the iso and all goes fine with the setup until I try to use it. Instead of a screen asking me if I want to buy a subscription as I expected I get a login box requiring a subscription I do not have to progress.
i went in and changed the repositories to the no-subscription versions but there seems to be nothing I can do to actually use proxmox without a subscription. How can I get the system up and working, I do not wish to advise my friend to use a different VM system, proxmox is the best match to his requirements but not usable without a sysadmin to install it!

I don't recognize this at all. I run several Proxmox without a support subscription and I have never seen a login box requiring a subscription. Can you show a screenshot or a photo? It does show me "You do not have a valid subscription for this server. Please visit www.proxmox.com to get a list of available options." after login but that's just a notice/reminder and is not required and I can use the system normally by clicking the OK button.

You can use everything of Proxmox without a support subscription. You don't need to buy a license as it is AGPL3.0 as advertised on the company website.

How it is not working? Where did you get the ISO? There are warnings about having no support subscription on login and on update, but all functionality is available for free.

There are many threads about this from people who expect to have to pay for a license (which they do not, as it is open-source) and don't realize that all features are for free. Only if you want support from the Proxmox company (and slower and more field tested updates) do you consider buying a support subscription.

I do hope this is just a confusion of expectations as it would be a same if this would prevent you from using Proxmox VE (for home/learning purposes or using it as a business).

PS: I do have a community subscription (to support Proxmox) on my backup system, which removes the reminders but gets me nothing but a different update cadence compared to my regular system.

Damn, I just uninstalled to set up the next job I had, will redo shortly.
What I get as soon as I log into the ":8006" screen is a box asking for my username etc. This is using the latest iso from the proxmox site, version 8.4. I then tried 8.3, same thing. Will post screenshot in about 30 mins, thanks for any help you can give.

This has not changed in recent versions.

Sure, but simpl yclick OK and Proxmox VE should just work. If you have any problems with Proxmox, it's not because of the lack of updates (although no-subscription repository can help you install updates and fixes) or support subscription. Please show the error messages and troubles you have with using Proxmox (as not all hardware works perfectly with Proxmox or Linux).

Sorry for inserting twice, not sure how that happened, but that's what I see and there seems to be no "OK" button to click. This is a fresh install on a mini-PC that runs Debian just fine, it did run Windows when it arrived earlier today but some things have to be eliminated fast!
I simply booted from the iso burned onto a USB and that's what I get. Can ssh in just fine.

username = root
password = what you entered as password at installation = ssh password
-> "Login"

the no subscribtion notice comes after logging in ;)
