Maybe I'm missing something, but here is an example scenario with PBS that makes me scratch my head a little bit.

Customer creates a VM, VMID 505, VM Name App Prod 1.

PBS backs it up just fine for months, has long term retention setup on all VMs.

Customer deletes VMID 505.

One month later customer wants to restore App Prod 1, but no one can remember the VMID.

Looking at PVE under storage and selecting the PBS server, you can't see VM names here, just VMID's - how does one fine App Prod 1 to restore?

Also, product suggestion - when looking at the PBS backup server under PVE, you should collapse the backups/retentions per VM on this screen like you do when looking at them via PBS -> data store -> content.

Looking at PBS interface directly, (1) you can't restore from here and (2) you can only see VMID's here too.

I have to be missing something obvious, what is it?

In PVE you can click on each of the PBS backups and hit the "Show configuration" button. Then you can atleast see the hostname and IP of that backed up VM to figure out what das VMID was.
But I don't know how to find that out in PBS. But there was a hook script somewhere here in the forums which will automatically add the VM name to the comments of that backup. So if you then look at the PBS (Datastore -> YourDatastore -> Content) it should be easy to identify backups because the "comments" coloum will now show the VM name.
