Warning states sum of thin volumes is greater than metadata capacity?

Hi there,

I received this warning when importing a VM disk

Sum of all thin volume sizes (1.73 TiB) exceeds the size of thin pool pve/data and the amount of free space in volume group (<16.38 GiB).

I believe this to be in error, as the number on the right I think is the metadata capacity of the thin pool? Which surely has little to do with the sum of the thin volumes themselves?

I worry that this implies some incorrect configuration of my setup, does anyone know why it's getting confused (or, if I'm wrong, how I'm confused!).

Attached are screenshots of all the relevant GUI pages, let me know if there's anything more I can provide!

no thats probably the free space in the LVM VolumeGroup not the lvmthin

check with 'vgs' 'lvs'

Right you are!
root@pve:~# vgs /dev/sdc: open failed: No medium found VG #PV #LV #SN Attr VSize VFree pve 1 18 0 wz--n- <1.82t <16.38g storage 1 3 0 wz--n- <931.00g 120.00m

I do wonder though, why is this an error?
Won't the sum of the thin volumes be over the amount left in the volume group as soon as they exceed 50% of the size of the volume group, which doesn't seem overly meaningful to me?

hmm?
the error basically says: "you have assigned more space than the thinpool has AND your underlying volume group also has not enough space (so you could grow the thinpool enough)"

Aha, I think I see my point of confusion.
I read this error message as 2 statements

1. The sum of the thin volumes > the size of pve/data
2. The sum of the thin volumes > the amount of free space left in the volume group

But rather, I believe you're saying the actual intended meaning is

3. The sum of the thin volumes > the size of pve/data + the amount of free space left in the volume group.

I understand now, thanks a lot for your patient help! I would maybe reccomend altering the wording of this warning, as it can be read as 2 statements rather than one (or maybe I'm the only one hehe), as well the GUI being in TB and the warning being in TiB added to my confusion

Sum of all thin volume sizes (1.73 TiB) exceeds the total size of thin pool pve/data (1.67 TiB) and the amount of free space in volume group (<16.38 GiB).

All the best,
Joshua
