Proxmox ZFS + Proliant ML380Gen8 + SAS HBA HP SC08Ge

Hello,

I have running a HP Proliant ML380Gen8
I have understand that ZFS is not recommended to use with RAID Cards.

I can buy a SAS HBA HP SC08Ge Host Bus Adapter for use with this server. They are limited to 3GB transfer.
What do you think about this configuration? Is very secure -and faster- than run ProxmoxZFS over the native Smart Array P420i? Main need of this server, is online ZFS replication.

Thanks !!

Exactly, the combinations makes only problems, most of the times. Putting a RAID card in HBA mode is fine though.

I mean, if you can I would test it now and look if all seems working and fast enough for your workload, IIRC, you can also enable HBA mode for those smart arrays and thus be good, from a technical stand point.

I can see at the specs, that the SAS HBA HP SC08Ge Host Bus Adapter is a HBA native card.
perfect.

Suposs that I use the same disks :
--this HBA HP SC08Ge (link) will improve the IO perfomance compared to Smart Array P420i (link) ?

not to sure, no direct personal experience with it.. But, AFAICT, you only can attach more drives to it with the linked adapter, so if you do RAID01 an additional RAID0 level should make it faster. Just using it alone won't gain you performance, it's only needed if the available hard disk slots are not enough, at least from a quick skim over the datasheet

all,

I noticed, that a HPE Gen8 is not able to boot from a P420i in HBA mode.
Not sure if it's working with a different controller, but I assume it's BIOS related.
With Gen9, HPE switched from BIOS to UEFI, which works after some manual tweaks.

Cheers,
luphi

I have similar servers I am trying to get going but Proxmox does not display the drives attached to the HBA. They show up fine in the bios and in windows. They each have 2 P420i's, each with a single disk tray and 12 drives. Can you share what settings you adjusted to get yours working?
Thank you
