Proxmox Networking Not Working

I was having a DNS issue, which I fixed, and now networking on the machine is working; I can ping, etc. But I am not able to access the web interface. One thing that is different is that this machine was given the following IP: 10.87.12.233, whereas my other machines were given different ones, like 10.86.7.185. I want to say it's because of the difference in the IP, which is why I cannot view it, but as you can tell, I do not have much knowledge of networking.

I made the changes in the hosts file, and I also changed the subnet to /16. However, when I go to the http://10.87.12.233:8006/ url in my browser, it is not active.
/16 was short speak. I am sure its not /16, the Uni admin would need to be seriously impaired by some substance to configure it so.
My advice - stop messing around with static IP assignment and configure for DHCP.

The subnet may be similar in range to the one on your pc/laptop, but could be completely different. I'd also double check the GW you used is correct.

There is no guarantee that network nodes on Uni network can freely speak to each other.

fair enough, I was going to get the staitc IP assignment setup first and then see how that went to see if my IP got changed or not. For the network nodes I would need a device on the same node to be able to access the webui? I could be misunderstanding here but could I not just use a couldflare tunnel to expose it so that I could access it from any device?

Another thing, I did just go and make the changes for the DHCP, and it looks like it went through. I did the edit and reload, and even rebooted just to make sure, but the subnet did not change. I don't know if it was supposed to change from 16; I take it not changing means that is correct?

May be, I could have been wrong about DHCP subnetting. Can you ping GW/DNS/google.com now from PVE?
Does "curl -sk https://[ip]:8006|grep title" when run from PVE console return anything?
Can you ssh into PVE?
Does "systemctl status pveproxy" look normal?
What does "ip a" look like now?

Apolgoies about the late reply, I can ping just fine and when I curl it and use grep I can see the title that the webui is live. I can also see that the pveproxy status is active and working fine. Below is my ip a ouput. To me everything looks good and I cannot access it because it is on another network node so I need to proxy it somehow. I am also not able to ssh into the machine.

Careful at the uni. Some sys admin is scratching his head as to what's going on on his network. Slowly narrowing it down - room by room.

You reckon? Do you think I should forget about proxmox and just install an os and just use the server as one machine or what?

I don't know your use case. But don't try running a Datacenter on a university dorm network, unless your the sys admin of the dorm.

Yeah, I understand. I was thinking my best course of action would be to buy a 5G router and then have the server connected to that so it is on its own network and I can just use that instead. Is this even feasible?

Proxmox is not WiFi friendly, get a router with wired connectivity option. Plug uplink to your primary network, connect your workstations to the router as clients. Any cheap router from amazon is able to do DHCP on "lan" side and NAT/route to your WAN.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting a 5G router that has a wired option and then using a sim card in it. Connecting the server and then my devices, etc. So this is a good solution and would work?

Definitely possible. I run my own home exactly this way. I have a Proxmox host wired with 2 wired Lan connections to a 4G router. The router also provides home Wifi access. Works like a charm.

Just be cautious of bridging your self-managed 5g network to Uni, exposing PVE to public and providing a potential entry point for someone who should not have one

PS i would check with your Uni policy on whether you are even allowed to be running one.

I'll just add one thing. When you get the router. Connect it all up. Make sure the router has an Internet connection & then re-install Proxmox anew, otherwise this forum post will at-least double in size!
