Yet, another drive layout opinion is needed

Hello all,

I am new here and I am building my first real attempt “amateur” homeserver.
After tried, for a brief period, other solutions (including the trial version of Unraid) I just figured out that maybe it was time to build something from scratch using proxmox.
Reading a lot of posts here and on other communities, I’m trying to make (most) of the right choices at the beginning.

Use case:
  • “simple” file server
  • maybe one (or more?) VM with docker/portainer managing a “download station”, “media station”, “storage/sync station” and, maybe later, a “cloud station” and a VM with home assistant.
  • one or two VM ubuntu flavour and win 11 for tests.
(Present) Hardware Resources:
  • 2x 12TB HDD Seagate Ironwolf
  • 1x SSD Samsung pm883 960GB
  • 2x HDD 320GB + 2x HDD 500GB (they were used in laptops for 2 years)
  • Asus Pro B560M with i5-10500 (6 sata ports)
  • 2x32GB DDR4 non-ECC.
  • All that in a Antec P101 case with 8x 3.5’’ bays + 2x 2.5’’ bays
  • (I also have an 4-port SATA expander with ASM1064)
  • A Sinology DSM211j with DSM 6.3 wich I don’t know where the f* power brick is…

So, after reading several posts, I was thinking this layout for the drives:
  • 2x 320GB HDD Mirror in ZFS(?) for boot drive. (After reading a few reply's of @Dunuin in others doubts).
  • Buy another Samsung pm883 960GB and ZFS mirror for VM/containers.
  • 2x500GB HDD mirror in ZFS for “cold archive” of critical data ( my critical data at the momento is is about 150GB and every its add 20/25GB)
  • 2x12TB HDD with mergefs than contains the bulk of the linux isos flavours like LoR, GoT, SWars,…

My abilities:
I’m very skilled in reading and gathering information from several sources and using the charming method of trial/error (and copying CLI examples)

I will appreciate all the inputs of members with experience and knowledge will give even if that implies a 180º in the layout and/or the possibility of buying one or two more drives to optimize any suggestions that will be made.
