I have a PVE 4.4.35-1 server without a case, just on the table for two years, using it as a desktop with various VMs with video cards passthrough and had to move it to the office now, so assembled it into a case and now it is not booting!

I have 250 GB SSD with the system and most used VMs and 2TB HDD to store VMs and some VMs running from it too.

grub is OK,
here is what it says on boot:

[EDIT] - seems like this following error I always had and have... the problem appears to be changing the orders (slots) of video cards... I was able to reproduce the error and do not boot again - stuck in the same place!

Loading Linux 4.4.35-1-pve ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
Loading, please wait ...
[ 3.306785] systemd-sysv--generator[1409]: Ignoring creation of an alias umountiscsi.service for itsel

And hangs here, nothing else...

Booting from PVE USB in rescue mode just getting stuck after:
[OK] Mounted Debug File System.

I believe it's the same USB I installed PVE, but not sure if I did any updates then... no major upgrades tho.

Is it that bad? Any ideas? The search did not bring me much... Is there any way to restore it or to get out VMs and use em on another installation, or else please?

Many thanx in advance!

OK, seems it's solved:

I did change video card config while was moving into the case, I had 3 video cards: ATI r9 280x for passthrough, Nvidia 1060 for passthrough and ATI 6670 for Proxmox, so I removed the last one while was assembling a case and everything seems to work but no boot...

So I decided to go back as close as possible to old config and started from removing two cards and brought back the one which was used for Proxmox only (ATI 6670) and it worked!

I did not investigate further yet as have no video cards to passthrough...
will report later, hope it helps someone...

OK - not booting again, just changed the order of video cards back, even adding back ATI 6670, so it has nothing to do w:
[ 3.306785] systemd-sysv--generator[1409]: Ignoring creation of an alias umountiscsi.service for itsel

FIXED!
with changing in BIOS to a proper value in "Boot pci-e slot priority"
Seems like motherboard will just select next slot if the video card is not available in prioritized, but PVE just hangs.

Good luck!
