Why is there no logrotate for messages and daemon.log ?

Hello,

I wonder if there is something we do wrong somewhere in our configuration or if this is a proxmox issue. It seem like ours PVE and PBS servers stopped log rotating /var/log/daemon.log and /var/log/messages in may/june 2024. I just found out when looking up why a FS was full. Is it a known issue?

I checked two Proxmox installations but I don't have any /var/log/daemon.log at all. Did you install some additional software on the Proxmox host?

Thanks, probably something on our end I guess. We use central ansible management and we usually use ubuntu instead of debian. Probably something different caused that issue. I'll have to investigate

Haha, it's funny this kaputtautomatisiert thing but I would not stop automating, the balance is far way more positive than negative

Debian 12/Bookworm, and therefore PVE 8 and PBS 3, is (only) using the systemd journal by default: [1].
So, if you (additionally) use other syslog tools, like e.g.: rsyslog, you also need to configure/maintain/troubleshoot the log rotation for those.

I think if you upgraded from an earlier version that did use syslog you might end up with leftover log files in /var/log as well.
