Why is /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts a symlink in a cluster node?

I understand it is supposed to link to the cluster-common pmxcfs one and only copy, but why is it necessary?

All the ssh incarnations triggered by the GUI or jobs could be always run with -o UserKnownHostsFile= pointing to the one and only source of cluster truth to avoid any issues, or am I missing something?
