[SOLVED] WAN went down. Back up, but now my VMs will no longer connect to the LAN.

I couldn't login to the proxmox web interface this morning. Checking the machine directly, I found it displaying a message that it had been unable to boot due to ext4 recovery issues. I rebooted and it booted without issue. I later learned that the wan connection had been lost due to a Comcast outage while I slept (not sure why that would cause the prxomox machine to reboot nor cause an ext4 error unless the machine was in the middle of something - and I'd have to learn how to check the logs).

Although the proxmox box rebooted fine and everything on the proxmox web interface seems normal, my VMs are not connecting to the lan. I cannot ssh into any VM. I am able to log into the VMs via the proxmox web console, but am unable to ssh or ping from a VM to any other machine on the lan.

Note that the proxmox machine itself has a working lan connection (and I took a moment to scp my promxox VM backups to another machine for safety ... should I copy anything else?).

For testing:
* Rebooted proxmox machine again. Made no difference.;

* I restored one VM from a working backup but that made no difference; and

* I tried creating a new debian VM but in the middle of the install I received the following message:

The network autoconfiguration was successful. However, no default route was set: the system does not know how to communicate with hosts on the Internet. This will make it impossible to continue with the installation unless ...
I am running pfsense which shows Proxmox up and running but all VMs are shown as inactive.

I am a network newb (both networking issues and network jargon).

Any and all assistance is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: 4:17PM I just booted my old proxmox machine; started one of the VMs; and logged in via the proxmox web console. I was able to ping other machines on the network.

I then tried to build a new debian based VM (using an existing debian iso in the proxmox storage) and I received the same message I received earlier on my new proxmox machine:

"... no default route was set: the system does not know how to communicate with hosts on the Internet..."

So, whatever happened to cause the problem, it's apparent it isn't something that happened to the proxmox machine, since the other machine hasn't been powered up for several months. Yet, only the proxmox VMs are having problems. Both proxmox machines and all my other linux, OS, and windows machines are working fine with full internet and lan wide connections. But for reasons I cannot fathom, the proxmox VMs are not connecting to the network.

Edit: 6/27/2024 : There was a problem with the pfsense box which rebooting resolved. Which, in turn, resolved the issue with the proxmox VMs.
