hi,

are you trying to connect to pptp from the VM, or are you trying to set it up on the VM?

thanks for the response, i have a virtual machine of debian 10 server (VM1) created from proxmox. i want to use the VPN PPTP in the VM 100. so that it will carry the static public IP of the VPN

OpenVPN is totally free and is far more secure.

As far as Proxmox goes, you shouldn't have any issue with PPTP but realize that PPTP is a point to point protocol and is not useful for routing traffic. PPTP is useful if you have a client machine and you want to talk to a specific server. You can make a point to point tunnel (hence the name Point to Point Tunneling Protocol...PPTP).

Another issue that can sometimes come up is that PPTP needs type 47 packets forwarded and some routers don't have this turned on. A tool like TCPDUMP is useful here to see if you are getting any information at all.

In your description, you say that you have a public IP address. Is that address already assigned to your firewall? Are you not able to use port forwarding instead?

Thanks for your response. I was able to use the pptp without any stress but it disconnects consistently so I have written to my VPN service provider to change my protocol to OpenVPN . and when it comes to PPTP needs type 47 ( i have done some reading but i am still trying to understand how to use the web gui firewall interface to forward gre packets. I will be glad if you can explain hw to perform this task.

Oftentimes, firewalls will have special profiles for certain protocols that need special attention. For example, PPTP needs type 47 packets, IPSec needs type 50 packets, FTP needs a helper port for data after the command channel is established.
