VM images expanded after a system update

my vm/ct boot images suddenly started using their full allocated space, and i wasn't excepting that so now 100% of my servers storage is being used, and i not sure how to proceed from here because i don't really have any storage to work with. my id 100 container is only using 42.87 gigabytes but on the disk it is allocated 250G
