I've been running a few guest VM with gpu passthrough ubuntu 16.04 and Fedora 27 recently. But from time to time when I start the VMs they do not boot correctly from the attached hard disk (I get a blank screen) and some times get the grub menu from the CD ROM image of the installation media. I don't know how to recover my VM from the state. And so, end up creating yet another VM guest.

I'm running proxmox 5.1 Linux pve 4.13.13-5-pve #1 SMP PVE 4.13.13-36 (Mon, 15 Jan 2018 12:36:49 +0100) x86_64.

dmesg on the host reports:
Buffer I/O error on dev zd352, logical block 7, lost async page write

When I boot the CD-ROM image of ubuntu I've run these commands:
sudo mkdir -p /media/datadrive
sudo blkid
sudo e2fsck -y /dev/vda2
> this command does some checking and recovering of journal
mount /dev/vda2 /media/datadrive
> I am now available to view the content of the vda2 drive.

However, if it stop the vm and start it up to boot from the virtio disk the OS still doesn't boot.

Any tips on what to do next?

It turned out to be I had run out of storage space on the drive which was holding the VM disk images. I removed a few VMs from PVE to clear up some storage space and re-started my ubuntu VM and it booted back to life!
