Hi,

I run some vm’s with some Linux distributions and it’s working fine.

But today I installed a windows manager i3 and I can’t get the vm receiving any actions from the keyboard.

When i3 is run the first time, I have to set up 2 elements from the keyboard and the input are recognized.

When I restart the vm and select i3 regarding if it’s a Fedora or Ubuntu distribution, none of my keyboard actions are received by the vm…

If I restart and select Gnome, the input are working fine inside the vm.

Do you have any idea how to solve this?

Thank you

The windows manager does not make any difference to the functionality of the VNC console. The input is forwarded to the VM the same.

The issue is most likely your i3 config, I'd guess. Does the config you use in the VM work bare metal? Have you tried SPICE?

Hello,

I had some issues as well and found only one working configuration: tigervnc as server and realvnc client (on MacOS)...
Btw. pure keyboard control on Mac via VNC is a mess, because a lot shortcuts are already assigned and it's hard to find free ones...

What works here for me on an i3 as my main desktop is to use Spice and the remote viewer. As the remote viewer grabs all keyboard input I can use the same shortcuts as on my main i3 instance.

Though on a Mac it is not as easy to get the remote viewer working, so probably not an option for you :/

Thank you everyone for all the insights.
I will make more experiments to get this sorted out ^^
