Hi All, ProxMox is new to me and there are a number of things I’m having trouble with so I’m after some assistance or advice.

I have a bare metal Proxmox VE installation running on a HP Elitedesk desktop. There is a VM installed for Ubuntu Desktop which is set to run at startup. I have confirmed that the VM is running at startup but the desktop is not visible after I login.

Can anyone advise if it is possible to have the Ubuntu Desktop visible after I login?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Why would you expect the VM desktop to be visible on the Proxmox host? Proxmox, as an clustered enterprise hypervisor, is managed remotely. You are supposed to access VMs from another computer using a web browser (and protocols like VNC, SPICE or other remote ways like RDP).
You could look into GPU passthrough to give a whole GPU to a single VM (with lots of caveats, more information in the manual and the Wiki). Or install a Linux desktop environment (there is some information on the Wiki) directly on Proxmox (which is based on Debian) and use a web browser that way. What are you trying to achieve exactly and how might it fit with the way Proxmox is expected to be used?

I’ve decided to take the plunge and change my computer and security system at my property. I was running Blue Iris on a Windows 10 system with a Cisco 3750 switch, but I’m over the problems faced ever time there was a windows update or change. I also want to start using Home Assistant to automate some functions around the property such as irrigation.

I’ve decided to go down the path of Proxmox and Linux to get away from Windows altogether at the property. At this point I will still have a Windows Laptop that I use at home to remote into the property system.

The computer at the property is a HP Elitedesk 800 G4 which I have wiped and started by doing a bare metal install of Proxmox then a VM of HAOS. At this point I decided to get a rack to better house the system. During this acquisition I managed to gain an Iomega® StorCenter™ ix12-300r Network Storage Array and a Dahau Network Video Recorder (16 port POE with two 10 TB surveillances drives for video storage) The intention is to send any motion events to Frigate for analysis and report any issues via HA.

I’ve also decided to purchase a HP Prodesk with an Intel i5 7500, 8GB ram & 500GB SSD to use as a bare metal installation for pfsence so I can setup a firewall with rules using the five VLAN’s that will also be created.

This is where I’m unsure of the best way to progress the upgrade. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The monitor and keyboard on the hardware running Proxmox is normally used by the Proxmox hypervisor even though Proxmox is usually controlled via it's web based GUI.
It is possible to pass through to a VM the
  • Graphics card
  • USB keyboard & Mouse
  • Auto start (after a user set delay) the VM
To enable a VM to use local physical resources and by physically used locally. However doing so is harder than running the Ubuntu bare metal.
