Use raid hardware alongside zfs for Disks Setup

I have an ancient server HP ProLiant ML110 G7 with 8GB RAM and i want to use Smart Array RAID alongside ZFS

My available Disks are
2x 500GB HDD
3x 1TB disk HDD
The server have 4 Port SATA and 1 port CD/DVD

Proposed Proxmox Configuration:
OS: 500GB with RAID 1 hardware
VMs : 3TB with ZFS (RAIDZ-1)

How do you recommend configuring the disks? and it is good idea to use raid hardware alongside zfs ?

integrated sata ports are provided by smart array b110i which is not a hw raid controller but a "software raid", better to switch the b110i to stock ahci controller then zfs will be ok.
Remember ZFS isn't speedy.
