Hi,

I'm connecting an usb device to my VM and I'm using this guide: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/USB_Devices_in_Virtual_Machines and it says:
"How to connect devices to a running machine without shutting it down is demonstrated by the examples from above. If device is assigned in that way the assignment is valid until the machine stops. The assignment is independent of the actual status of the device (whether it´s currently plugged in or not), i.e. it can be plugged in and out multiple times and will be always assigned to the VM; regardless if the "Productid" or "busaddress" method is used."

How can I make this permanently? i.e. if I restart or shutdown/start the VM can it detect the usb device immediately. Is there some file in Proxmox where I can do this?

Thanks in advanced,
Regards

Hi, I think the thread you are citing is a good staring place. I haven't touched USB hardware mapping to a VM in Proxmox for >4 years so my understanding may be a bit stale. At that time I was trying to map a "Hardware License Key Dongle USB Key" to a VM, so that I could have an annoying piece of software - run a license server app - which required a physically attached USB Dongle to provide the valid license key proof of ownership. I believe I did end up getting it working. The Thread you are citing - general gist of this - is that the config associated with the static mapping needs to ultimately end up in the KVM Config file for the VM in question.

ie, on a stock proxmox host, get your ssh session open as root on the host, proceed to directory, and look for the config files in directory, /etc/pve/qemu-server
one config file per KVM VM you have present on this proxmox host.
plain text file which gives config currently in place.

I believe the config stanzas discussed at the URL you gave (https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/USB_Devices_in_Virtual_Machines) should result in new static entries being added to the config file / and will be visible in this text config.

End of the day, I have the feeling the USB pass through support to VMs is a feature provided by upstream KVM, not so much a "proxmox support issue". But maybe you will find others who are ProxVE users who have done this more recently than me / and will be able to comment / update this thread.

Good luck,

Tim
