We plan to run a Windows-based application in a Proxmox VM that needs access to a USB-based RFID encoder device. The device will be attached to a client machine which is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The encoder is based on a Silicon Labs CP210x chipset and uses a virtual COM port driver to communicate with the software, which appears to be written in an old version of Visual Basic.

Silicon Labs has Linux drivers for their chipsets, so I'm wondering if it makes more sense to install that driver locally on the client machine and pass through at the COM port level or to try and use something like VT-d instead?
