Upgrade from 1.8 to 5.3 :)

Hello.
There is a server with Debian 5 and Proxmox 1.8
There are a lot of virtual servers on it.
Tell me how to be better? How to update the kernel and Proxmox to the latest versions without losing data .. is this possible?
Or is it better to raise somewhere Debian 9 and Proxmox 5.3 and migrate snapshots there?
Or none of this is impossible?

i would try to install a new box with 4.4 and try backup/restore and then upgrade to 5

otherwise you have to migrate the data/disks of the vms yourself

Scary just to take and update
I would still like to preserve the images before this, since there is a lot of information on them.
I did on v. 1.8 backup .. but how to download it I can not understand ...
ps: after I download it, is there no point in trying to restore it to v5.3? You must first put v. 4.4? And where can I restore it there?

yes you can try to restore it on 5.3 of course, i just thought the older backups were not compatible with the current versions (i am still not sure)

you have to copy the files to the correct location on the new host
