Hello again, everyone. Is it possible to upgrade a PVE Virtual Environment 4.4-24 to the new 8.3? I imagine it can be done from the shell, but could someone kindly write me the commands? I’m not very familiar with Debian and its commands.

Or, could it be done with a USB stick containing the ISO file, by reinstalling everything from scratch? I’m a bit worried because I imagine a fresh installation from USB will erase everything, and I have files on the disk that I don’t know how to retrieve.

I’m attaching a screenshot of the current configuration.
As you can see, on the local storage, I have files that I don’t know how to move to the NASMP storage.

You'll needto update to the latest 4.4, then upgrade to the lateset 5.x, then 6.x, 7.x and eventually 8.3. You'll need to follow all major upgrade guides, if you can find them, for all those unsupported versions. It's much easier to install a fresh PVE 8.3 and restore the VM/CTs from backups. That way you also can test them before retiring the old PVE 4.4.

Actually, I purchased a NUC on which I installed version 8.3, and I migrated a VM from the old PVE 4.4. The migration went exceptionally well. I restored it from a backup made by PVE 4.4 an hour earlier. So, VM backups from a 4.4 environment work perfectly when restored in an 8.3 environment. I didn’t want to perform a fresh installation on the old NUC with version 4.4 because I don’t know how to download some files stored on the local storage of the old NUC. Can you help me? Thanks

Please just copy the files from the old to the new using scp (which copies files over ssh) instead of trying to upgrade from 4.4. Also make sure to backup those files if they are important to you.

I have already tested on a new PVE with version 8.3, and I successfully restored a VM from the old PVE. It went well, so version 8.3 reads and reactivates VMs from backups made on a PVE 4.4 without any issues, so I'm confident about that. I'm not very skilled with Linux commands, but I'll try, because otherwise, I risk losing the file present in the local storage, and that would be quite frustrating for me.

I'm guessing those NasMP storages we see in the image you posted, are located on another NAS device you have in your network.

If you have already setup on the new NUC (PVE 8.3) that NAS device, then you could simply copy any files on the old NUC (PVE 4.4) to that NAS storage & retrieve those files from the new NUC. This will however depend on how you setup the NasMP storage/s on the old device & what these files are.

Good luck.

Yes, I confirm that the NasMP storage units are a local NAS that I connected to the new NUC with PVE 8.3, and everything worked perfectly. Now, I only have one issue: I can't copy files from the Local Storage of the old NUC to the NasMP due to access problems with the folder on the NasMP. However, I am investigating where it is getting blocked. Thank you for your help
