Proxmox newbie here. I completed the Proxmox configuration steps and made sure that my network device supports WoL but I have been unsuccessful on getting Wake-On-Lan work appropriately for my Proxmox host.

Physical machine: HP EliteDesk 800 G2 SFF. System Bios N01 Ver.02.51 10/19/2020
  • I can boot the Proxmox host using the physical power on button without issues
  • I am able to "wake" the machine from a shut-down state successfully (wakeonlan [mac:addr]), however with the following errors:
    • At first I believe that the machine tried to boot via network:
      • It provided an error PXE-E53: No boot filename received.
      • Then PXE-M0F: Exiting intel Boot Agent.
      • Finally stated "BootDevice Not Found" & "Please install an operating system on your hard disk."
    • After I disabled network boot I got a different error:
      • "Start PXE over IPv4"
        • I looked up the error and it looks like the machine is still trying to boot over network somehow

Has anyone seen this? I am starting to wonder if the regular wake on lan even works which directly boots to the existing operating system..

Yes. There is an option in BIOS to set what the machine will do when woken via WoL. Mine was set to "Boot from Network" which I changed to "Boot from Disk" or "Default boot".

Let me see if I can find the screen for you ....
