Hello,

i am trying to create a backup archive to be restored via WEB GUI in Proxmox.

I got zfs snapshots from my lxcs on a different machine and i mounted one of them to "tar" it. Then i copied it over to the proxmox hosts backup location and if i try to restore it keeps saying "archive contains no configuration file". I also tried to place the pct.conf in /etc/vzdump before tar it but no changes.

What am I doing wrong. I'm new to ZFS and Proxmox.

Hi,
simply using 'tar' is not enough. Proxmox uses 'vzdump' to create and restore backups. So when creating the backup file you can either use 'vzdump' or simply do it in the GUI under ID -> Backup -> Backup now.

Since archiving is not just tar-ing and saving configuration it is recommended to use only the built-in Proxmox functions for Backup/Restore. However: in the particular case you mentioned the file is expected as ./etc/vzdump/pct.conf (note the dot before slash!).
But even you adapt your archive you may run into trouble since the file owner "root" from inside the container is unknown on host level.
