How long should a vzdump of a 32GB KVM qcow2 image take on a simple system with a single SATA-II drive on an Intel P43-based mobo? (I'm assuming OS of guest or CPU type is irrelevant, but ask if it matters.)

In my case, the final 9.81GB backup took 1:28:40 to complete.

Is this par for the course?

Yeah, that's pretty normal.

It can go a little faster if you can do your backup over a gigabit LAN to an SMB or NFS share.

Yeah the time is really due to all the read and write to the same disk. This makes it very slow as the disk controller is mostly waiting for the disk to get to the right points for either reading or writing.

Think about putting in a second drive and backup to that or as the other person says send it to an NFS share.

One of my 50Gb KVM images backs up over to NFS in under 20 minutes.

Cheers,
