The Shell button doesn't seem to do anything.

I assumed that it would let me shell out to the OS of the VM or the NODE. When I do, it doesn't do anything. Please advise it's function and how to remotely shell out to the NODE.

I can reproduce that here, so I created a bug report

did you check if pop ups are enabled ?

(in chrome there is a small icon on the right sight of the url bar where you can enable/disable popups)

You are right, this was caused by the popup blocker. Works fine now.
