has anyone run proxmox IN lxc? i was thinking of trying that for testing as it would reduce one layer of virtualization if it works.

It would probably possible to start the GUI, but I don't think much of PVE would properly work, and is probably an untested configuration. For instance inside a LXC container you don't have any bloc kdevices in /dev. I don't know how the PVE storage manager would cope with that.
