I am evaluating moving from our VMware Essentials Plus setup with 3, 2 CPU HP DL380 G9 boxes to possibly 2 G11's running Proxmox that I'd purchase. I have Proxmox running on a spare G9 right now to kick the tires, our initial install and impression is favorable. We moved some VM's both using the import tool and using our Veeam restore to Proxmox function, and got a little test setup going - 3 Windows servers and a Win11 box.
I'd like to reconfigure the test server to better reflect what we would deploy, and I am looking for advice. The current G9 has a disk array controller setup with 2 RAID 0 drives (4, 1.2TB 10k SAS drives) which is not what I want - I can either set it up as a 4 drive RAID5 or perhaps something else? Not sure if there is a passthru ability, my VMware servers are all RAID5 with a hot spare. I also have Synology NAS's on a 10G network - I use iSCSI on the VMware setup and tested with Proxmox, not sure if that's what I want either.
What are the suggested setup parameters for a G9? Any guidance? Our IO loads are pretty light, probably 20-25 VM's in total. Looking to move some services over to the Proxmox host and go live prior to making the full commitment with new (to us) G11's.
Thanks!
Steve
