hi i was recently faced with a situation where i had to downgrade proxmox versions.
what I did poorly in this, was that I didn't backup all the relevant locations. I got most of them and erroneously lulled myself into a sense of security when i backed up
The one I missed was
i understand that this was completely my own stupidity by not remembering this, but i also feel that this kind of issue could be solved by simply including a copy of each vm's .conf file in whatever storage directory that the user opts to have. it seems a little silly that we dont because the space utilisation for this additional replication will be essentially nothing and it removes one less potential headache that could come about when faced in a similar situation
esxi adopts a monolithic directory structure for each vm and for good reason, to stop silly people like me clogging up valuable support time and venturing down the route of time consuming data recovery software that finds deleted files if they've not by chance been overwritten
sadly this lost me the validity of my pfsense+ licence because i can't figure out what combination of nics i used (I use SR-IOV so have many) for the vm nor its mac
