Hi, I have a very peculiar issue that just came up.

I am playing with ProxMox at the moment, trying to setup a nice VM server with File server capability.
I use a Proxmox setup on top of a configured Debian 8 basic server(I want to use BTRFS for my storage hence the need for this config)

I had rebuild the setup several times already, and all the time, as soon as I got the Proxmox going
I could access the server from internet using my user.ddns.net address with port :8006
but the current setup (just finish the install and configuration) is not visible.
I can get the admin interface from with in local LAN just fine. all is working as expected so far
but connecting from let say work PC using https://user.ddns.net:8006 get me "ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT" message.

it worked with last rebuild. and I am pretty much using the same setup.
no additional steps have been needed last time.

PS>> I rebuild the server because I had screwed up the setup trying to setup NFS server on the host and deleting wrong folder. I want to use NFS on the main host (this is a home based one host setup. no cluster or anything like that.) so I can expose local mounted drives to all guests VM and real PC alike. for example I want to expose the local storage for proxmox ISO so I can upload the files there easier from maybe my main PC or download them directly using deluge or transmission setup in a VM

I want to NFS expose my data drives that will be on the host (this is a build using 24 hot-plug drives case, so all storage will be hosted here as well.) I am thinking of setting up a webmin in parallel with proxmox for easy management of the storage and NFS export. I know it works so not much of an issue here.

Re: Access Main host from outside

You're using a dynamic DNS so it looks like there is the problem if you can reach your host from the local network.
Is port 8006 of your host actually reachable from the outside? Do you use NAT and forward the port correctly?

Re: Access Main host from outside

Well that's just it, it worked last week. I had build out the server, as in setup the deb8, install all updates, install proxmox, installed webmin.
I tried to login from work and it was working. I could get to proxmox web gui, could get to webmin gui. Now after I rebuild the server again. Same steps and process as before it is not reachable. I thought I ask.

Re: Access Main host from outside

Hmm, that sounds really strange. Is only the Proxmox VE gui not reachable or anything else also?
Can you ping your server from outside the network over the DynDNS address?

Re: Access Main host from outside

you know what, you are right. I can not ping the address from my work.
it might be the firewall at the office causing the problem.
I will try the connection from friends PC in a couple of days and see if that is it.
thanks

Re: Access Main host from outside

Ok good to know that it's not PVE web gui only.
Proxmox VE also has a firewall (to be exact, you can configure one on datacenter, one on each node and one on each VM), maybe check also those.

btw.: There are online ping tools (your favorite search engine helps here) which shouldn't be firewall restricted, but I don't know how reliable they are.

Re: Access Main host from outside

ok folks, I had found the issue and was ME

I overlooked a little thing like the fact that I had changed the main server IP from 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.4 on the last setup.
I had used the .4 address several times in the past and forgot that the last several times I used .3 and that I had some port forwarding rules setup using the .3 IP. since it did not worked for the prevision config (oVirt and Cloudmin) I forgot about it. but the port forward worked for ProxMox just fine (yahooooo) I guess the firewall settings on proxmox do a better job compared to other apps I tried. with a bit of fiddling I even managed to get the webmin and Openmediavault UI working remotely.
I am in ecstasy right now. hooting, laughing and jumping around like crazy. all but doing cartwheels all over the office :-0.

it's a shame I keep forgetting the little things like this all the time.
