Hi!

We are using ProxmoxVE for several years. So far there was no serious problems, everything was solved by google allmighty :) Unfortunatelly now we have problem that we cannt solve.

We are runing ProxmoxVE 5.0-30 on Lenovo x3550 M5 server. There is Windows 2016 on one VM. We want to enable USB external HDD seen by W2016. I pluged it in USB port, added USB device in VMs hardware tab, restart VM and windows recognise external HDD. Everything seems to be fine BUT it works desperatelly slow. Copy 30MB file from/to external HDD takes ~1 hour.

I tested it on other Proxmox server with several external HDDs and got same results. Same HDDs works fine on regular computer, so I doubt that its HDDs problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

if it is a usb3 drive and a usb3 port, you can try to activate usb3...
or you could try to add the drive not as usb, but as a block device
e.g. /dev/sdX

Thanks for advice, it works much better. Both disk and port is USB3 and now works full trottle :)

Now we have speed but it stores everything in one big XXXgb.raw file. In case of ProxmoxVE or VM goes down I cannt plug this disk in other machine and copy data. Or I can?

what did you do exactly? did you mount the disk on the host and created a storage ? this works of course also, but to get your data out, you have to
manually mount the partitions on the raw file, or attach it to another vm which can read the data

Yes, I did exactly as You described. Yesterday managed to disconnect drive from one physical machine and connect to another and manually mounted to another VM. It works as expected.

Thanks for Your advice.
