Shared Storage

I was trying to move our ESX environment to Proxmox. The biggest issue we found is the shared storage. We can't find a good combination to be able to use with shared storage for fiber channel storage. We can get the LUN to appear in all the Hosts. However, there is no such file system that allows multiple host access. Is there a VMFS like file system that supports multiple host access? Based on my research, the only closest one is OCFS2, but Proxmox doesn't support it.

Hi @SLS, welcome to the forum.

You've done a solid job researching your Cluster File System options, and came to the right conclusion that OCFS2 is pretty much the only viable solution for a clustered file system.

Yes, OCFS2 is not in the supported Matrix of the PVE. As such, you are on the hook for the installation, configuration and maintenance. A key aspect of maintaining OCFS2 is ensuring it remains forward-compatible with future Kernel and QEMU updates. For instance, there was a recent regression affecting Kernel and OCFS2 interactions, and as far as I know, it may not be entirely resolved yet.

If you're committed to using your existing FC storage and need a supported infrastructure, LVM is your only option. By "supported," I mean you'd be eligible for a support subscription and have access to official assistance when needed.

Good luck in your decision making.
