Setup not reading correct ram size

Forgive me I am still new to virtualization. I have 8 gigs currently installed but the web UI only reads 4 gigs. It also shows 4 gig swap. Not sure if I missed something in the setup or configuration to change. Thank you for the help in advance.

Bios is up to date. I just don't want to move to another product. I really enjoy this one. I'm not sure what else it might be.

Please run the following and post back

uname -r
free -m
grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo

The first will check to see if you have a 32 bit or 64 bit kernel
the other 2 are just memory command.

Have you had other operating systems installed on this hardware? How much ram did they report being able to use?

This sounds an awful lot like a hardware problem.

I have not. I just bought the equipment about a week ago. I could try booting to an OS to it to see what it reads. I just hope it isn't hardware related.

Sounds like ECC registered RAM, You only have half of what you install. Older Intel hardware?

I just ran ubuntu from live usb and it also reads only 4 gigs so it does look like it might be hardware

One thing you can try before you go to the lengths of blowing away your proxmox install, when you boot proxmox, the grub loader has quite helpfully (thank you devs!) included a memtest image. Try booting into memtest and see what it sees.

Also, you're 100% sure the BIOS sees all 8GB? What motherboard is this?

Ok sorry for all the mass posts, but I have found the issue. It was not reading the full 8 due to one of the ram sticks was defective. Going to swap out and possibly get 16 gigs. Thanks every one for the help, kind of dumb I didn't start off troubleshooting the hardware first. Thanks again and I will post an update when I have the new memory.

Just wanted to post the final update and that would be that the ram was defective and I have upgraded the ram to a 16 gig kit and it reads correctly. I would like to thank every one for their help.
