Hi everyone!

I’m diving into the world of Proxmox and would love to tap into your expertise for my first major project. I’ve recently acquired a Dell PowerEdge T640, and my goal is to install Proxmox to satisfy my usage, media streaming and developing.

Here’s the planned setup:
  • Boot Drive: 500GB SSD
  • Storage Configuration:
    • Create a raidz for the SSDs.
    • Create a raidz for the HDDs.
Initially, I intended to use TrueNAS Core as a VM to manage all the storage, but after doing some reading, I’m uncertain if this is the best approach.

Questions:
  1. Optimal Setup: What’s the best way to configure the storage on this system for optimal performance and reliability? Should I stick with using TrueNAS Core for storage management, or would you recommend a different approach?
  2. Virtualization Best Practices: Are there any best practices for running TrueNAS Core as a VM in Proxmox, particularly regarding resource allocation, network setup, or storage passthrough?
  3. Controller: Should I invest in an true HBA controller like the HBA330? Or would it be possible to use one of the others?
Hardware Details:

  • Server: Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 (8xLFF)
  • Processor: Intel Xeon Gold 6132, 14-Core 2.60 GHz
  • Memory: 64 GB DDR4 ECC RAM
  • Storage:
    • 3x12TB HDD
    • 2x1TB SSD
    • 1x500GB SSD
  • Controllers: H740P, S140
Any advice, tips, or experiences you could share would be immensely helpful. I’m eager to get this setup running smoothly and efficiently.

Thank you in advance for your help!
