I’m diving into the world of Proxmox and would love to tap into your expertise for my first major project. I’ve recently acquired a Dell PowerEdge T640, and my goal is to install Proxmox to satisfy my usage, media streaming and developing.
Here’s the planned setup:
- Boot Drive: 500GB SSD
- Storage Configuration:
- Create a raidz for the SSDs.
- Create a raidz for the HDDs.
Questions:
- Optimal Setup: What’s the best way to configure the storage on this system for optimal performance and reliability? Should I stick with using TrueNAS Core for storage management, or would you recommend a different approach?
- Virtualization Best Practices: Are there any best practices for running TrueNAS Core as a VM in Proxmox, particularly regarding resource allocation, network setup, or storage passthrough?
- Controller: Should I invest in an true HBA controller like the HBA330? Or would it be possible to use one of the others?
- Server: Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 (8xLFF)
- Processor: Intel Xeon Gold 6132, 14-Core 2.60 GHz
- Memory: 64 GB DDR4 ECC RAM
- Storage:
- 3x12TB HDD
- 2x1TB SSD
- 1x500GB SSD
- Controllers: H740P, S140
