Search backup not for date but for file

Hi,

first of all: Thank you very much for PBS (and PVE). It is such a great piece of software.

Currently, I can search the backups on PBS by selecting the VM and then an individual backup by date. There, I can dive into the file system and retrieve a file.

Sometimes, I would like to first dive into the file system and then select the file I am looking for based on the date (e.g. latest).

Is there a way to do that? If not, is that something that might be implemented in the future?

Thanks!

Hi,
no and not likely going to be implemented anytime soon. Backups for VMs are block-based, so PBS does not know what is actually on the backed-up disks. For file restore, a disk from a backup needs to be scanned for filesystems and mounted in a dedicated file restore VM. For searching a file you will need to mount the disk from each backup and search the file system. Could be slighlty automated, but will be very slow and doesn't seem worth it.

For container backups such a feature might be feasible, because they are file-based, but nothing planned right now AFAIK.
