Good morning!
I would like to go through the possible scenario of a boot SSD breaking. My setup is the following (system was not intended for continuous use in the first place):
2x 2TB NVMe SSD
- one SSD has PVE and a Thin-LVM for VM storage
- one SSD is unused
1x 4TB HDD
- stores regular backups of PVE VMs through built-in backup functionality
Proxmox Backup Server
- stores regular backups of PVE VMs through built-in backup functionality
Scenario: The SSD containing PVE and Thin-LVM breaks.
My expectations are:
- I can reinstall PVE on the currently unused SSD (or buy another identical SSD, put both into RAID 1 and install PVE on that)
- PVE will loose its configuration
- I will be able to create a new Thin-LVM on the SSD storage
- PVE will detect the HDD again and also see the backups on it
- I will be able to reconnect the Proxmox Backup Server to PVE
- PVE will detect the VM backups on the Proxmox Backup Server
- I will then be able to restore the VMs to the new Thin-LVM from either the HDD or the Proxmox Backup Server
My questions are:
1. Can you see any flaws in my thought process?
2. I know that having PVE on a non-mirrored SSD is less than optimal. What would be your solution to possibly mirror said SSD in a way that a loss of that SSD would not lead to data loss, preferrably with as little downtime as possible?
Thank you all in advance,
Sebastian
