Hi,
I have Proxmox 8.2.4 running on a Beelink mini PC (EQ12). It has a NVMe SSD and a 1 TB Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD installed. The NVMe SSD is the boot disk on which Proxmox is installed (ext4). The SATA SSD is ZFS formatted and generates a bunch of I/O write errors (see below). But is seems there are also errors indicating that the SATA bus might have issues. I'm looking for help to identify the cause of all this. Note: I'm not getting any crashes or similiar. The system seems to run fine but I'm concerned that there are non obvious errors or it might die soon.

Yeah, clearly something is unhappy. It's not clear if it's a hardware thing, or if it's just something that could be resolved by changing a setting (ie disabling power saving for the drive, etc).

As a starting point, please run the command smartctl -a /dev/sda and post the result here. That'll help show the SMART values, which can be useful for stuff like this.

Oh, it's probably a good idea to run zpool status and paste the output here as well, just for good measure. :)

Thanks . Here are the outputs. Note that I have recently executed a scrub and a clear because the disk was degraded.

Code:
root@pve:~# smartctl -a /dev/sda

Hmmm, it's been so long since I've looked at consumer drives that I don't remember if those top two being non-zero is good or bad.

From doing a search on these forums, there are other examples of people having physical drive problems and having non-0 values there too. That could be a bad sign.

The "Total LBAs Written" value seems like it's probably a bit on the high side. If you look at the disk in the Proxmox web user interface, what does it say it's wear percentage is?

This issue springs to mind as well: https://www.neowin.net/news/linux-p...samsung-860870-ssds-in-intel-and-amd-systems/

Oh, some of my comments are in the linked Bugzilla issue that points to. I thought it sounded familiar.

Personally, I'd probably try disabling NCQ and TRIM on the drive (there are kernel options for it, and fairly easy to find online), just to see if the behaviour changes. Also look into disabling ASPM too (power management), to see if that helps.

Someone else might have better ideas as well, but those are the ones I'd start with. :)

Thanks . Here are the outputs. Note that I have recently executed a scrub and a clear because the disk was degraded.

Had the same problem with a 870_qvo_4tb , but I think it is controller related too , because I don't have the same problem on the Ryzen , it looks to be intel cpus .
So added this GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet libata.force=noncq" to grub.

Thank you all. I have tried the kernel parameters "pcie_aspm=off libata.force=2:noncqtrim" without success. There are also no cables that can be changed because the system has a sata connector for the SSD.

Anyway, finally I swapped the Samsung SSD for an older Kingston 256 GB SSD and the errors are gone. So the Samsung SSD was the issue. It seems that Proxmox is wearing SSD's out pretty quickly, I wonder if a NAS SSD like the WD Red would be a better choice?

My Kingston SSD is noticeable slower though, for example when creating a snapshot.

It seems that Proxmox is wearing SSD's out pretty quickly, I wonder if a NAS SSD like the WD Red would be a better choice?
That's common knowledge, just search the forums. Enterprise SSDs are best for PVE. I have no experience with NAS hardware.

I wonder if a NAS SSD like the WD Red would be a better choice?
As you're wanting to use SATA SSDs with Proxmox, look for the enterprise line of things as they have much higher endurance flash in them, and specialised circuitry to cope with power outages:
WD Red's seem like more of a prosumer thing? They don't seem to even have power loss protection circuitry.

Yes, this makes absolutely sense for a business but my mini pc is used at home as a smarthome system. So I'm hesitating to invest in more expensive Enterprise Class SSD's. WD Red's might be "good enough", at least in regards to endurance and they offer 5 years warranty. I might give it a try.

This is from their product brief:

Give It Your Tough Workloads
WD Red® SSD’s superior endurance can handle the heavy read and write loads demanded by NAS,
giving you the reliability you need in a 24/7 environment
