Hi,

I want to update my old proxmox installation, which ist still on 6.4 from May 2021, not quite a year old.
I wonder what the best way is to do an update. Maybe do it month by month?

That was a lot easier than expected.
However, the documentation is missing a zpool upgrade <pool>

It still all running, and now I have to update the VMs, but that is a diffrent story.
Thanks @Dunuin and Proxmox Team!

I wouldn't do that right away. After you upgraded your pool there is no way back to PVE 6.4 without deleting and recreating your pool because the pool won't work with PVE 6.4 anymore because ZFS isn't forward compatible. So now you are stuck with PVE 7. I only upgrade my pools after some weeks/months without problems so I always could restore a PVE6 backup when something with PVE 7 isn't working.

Well, yes I am using zfs on the desktop as well. The first versions of the 2.0.X branch were really troublesome, but now they seem fine. I do not use any fancy features anyway. I would not have done an upgrade without having tried the 2.1.X first.

I don't refer to problems with ZFS itself. Maybe you are using PVE6 with the 5.11 Linux kernel and PVE uses the 5.13 or 5.15 kernel. Also PVE7 uses different drivers. Maybe some of your devices aren'T working anymore with PVE7 so you need to go back to 6.4 for your hardware to work again.
But then your ZFS pool wouldn't work anymore, because it requires ZFS features that aren'T supported by the lower ZFS version of PVE6.

I totally understand your concerns, and they are all vaild.
But I have just a homelab, and not an enterprise business server.
I still think one could a add a note in the documentation, to mention just what you've said, as a disclaimer/note.
