Restoring Proxmox VMs from PBS Backups Stored on Unraid

After setting up a new Proxmox VE environment, I'm looking to restore my virtual machines (VMs) and containers from Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) backups stored on my Unraid system. Previously, I had a two-node Proxmox cluster, but I removed one node without properly detaching it from the cluster. I'm concerned that this might affect the restoration process. Could you provide guidance on the specific steps and considerations to ensure a successful restoration in this scenario? I can get the unraid share mounted on PBS but it doesn't show the VMs or CTs in the content window in datastore.

Hello!

I have a few questions,
Is this a new PBS instance or the original that was used to store the backups?
Did you encrypt your backups when setting up the connection between PVE and PBS originally?

Thank you!

Hi!
Thank you for your response. Let me provide some additional details:

  • This is a new PBS instance, and I did not retain any configuration files from the original PBS setup.
  • I’m not entirely sure if I enabled encryption when setting up the PBS-PVE connection, but I don’t have an encryption key saved in my password manager. If i did encrypt, i would have one there. If encryption was used, it might have been set to the PBS password.
  • I mounted the Unraid share on new PBS successfully, and the datastore is pointed to the correct path where the backups are stored. However, the content tab in the PBS datastore is empty, and it doesn’t display any VM or container backups.
  • I previously had a two-node PVE cluster, but I removed one node without detaching it properly. I’m concerned this might be affecting the restoration.
  • The backups were created directly on PBS (no manual file transfers), and include both VMs and containers.
  • I’m reading the datastore recovery thread https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/datastore-recovery.72835/ and am actively troubleshooting. I haven’t yet tried advanced commands to debug or verify the metadata but am open to any guidance you can provide.
Thanks again for your help! Let me know if you need additional details or logs.
