Hi there

I have a 3 node cluster i have setup for testing purposes before moving into production. Now, 2 of the 3 servers are going to be deployed into production (a 3rd server will follow in the coming months) as a new cluster and the 3rd original server will remain in test.

So basically i need to remove 2 nodes from the cluster and change ip addressing from our testing env to our new env.

Is there a recommended way to to this or simply it will be better to format the 2 servers from scratch and install pve6.1 in a fully new installation?

Hi,
I'd recommend that you do the following:
  1. Move all the VMs you don't need in production to the 3rd original server.
  2. If you need some of the VMs in production, make a backup and restore them at the end.
  3. Log into the 3rd server and follow the procedure described here to remove the two nodes from the cluster.
  4. Reinstall PVE on both nodes. Now they can join a cluster again. If you like, you can add a QDevice until the third production server is there, but please read the documentation carefully and don't forget to remove the QDevice before adding the third node to the cluster!
  5. Restore the VMs you wanted to keep around for production use.

@Fabian_E sorry for the long delay on answering; i have been doing some testing removing nodes from the cluster, reinstalling them, and adding them again just to check everything works fine.

Most of the time i have removed or added a (reinstalled) node from/to the cluster everything has worked fine, i would advise to remove/add nodes from cli instead of webUI. At least two times using Web i have faced problems, one of them one of my existing nodes were kicked off from the cluster (node1 of 1,2,3 was removed) while the new one (4) was added without issues (so cluster became 2,3,4), which was completely unexpected.

Adding nodes from cli has worked like charm all the times.
Thanks for you help, i will move into production in the coming weeks.
