Hey all,
thinking about what first to do with my new and shiny (re-polished
) Proxmox server (on old consumer hardware), I came up with this setup for a very simple fileserver in my home network that I would like to hear your opinion on.
Also, if somebody is or has been using a similar setup, your experiences (and how to avoid pitfalls) would be much appreciated.
My thought is to pass through an external USB (because that is what I have) to an Alpine LXC (because of the small footprint and focus on security) to access (encrypted and chunked) files on the USB drive via RClone from other devices on the home network (laptop using plain RClone, smartphone using e.g. RoundSync or RSAF).
I am aware of the helper script solutions, Turnkey fileserver-LXC and OMV/TrueNAS-VM options, which I might look into at a later stage.
The advantage of the simple version described above is that it resembles a potential future cloud solution, where data resides e.g. in a Storagebox and is accessed via RClone from wherever. So I could gain some practice with this kind of setup and find out if it works for me.
(Backup of the data is currently out of scope.)
Looking forward to your thoughts.
