Hi Quick questions .
I'm planning on getting a gpu for vms but i would like some advise beforehand
I seen the tesla p4 and it looks like a very viable option as i am restricted to a LP GPU in my server .
I also seen that you can use vGPU and "split" it over multiple vm's
But i seen too that you need a license . though as far as i've seen i dont rly know where to buy them or if there is a way to buy a perpetual one for not that much or anything
Will it be compatible with proxmox ? ( I saw it used but maybe it doesnt work anymore idk )
And overall do you think it's a good option or is there better alternatives on the cheap side ?

hi,

for vgpu we have a basic how to here: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/NVIDIA_vGPU_on_Proxmox_VE_7.x

it should be compatible with the current 5.15 kernel (works here with an RTX A5000)
as for licenses, you have to look up their partner list for places where you can buy them, just be aware that the perpetual licenses are much costlier than the subscription
ones (also they require an upfront 5 year update/maintenance fee) see https://docs.nvidia.com/grid/licensing-faq.html and https://www.nvidia.com/content/dam/...Virtual-GPU-Packaging-and-Licensing-Guide.pdf
for details on that

the real question is what you want to achieve with the vms? maybe there is an alternative way too?

The current vms feel clunky to me and i think it is because of the current graphic chip in the server ( one embeded in the motherboard) furthermore it maybe be used by friends who plans to run a plex library on a vm and as the p4 supports h264 encode / decode thought it would be a good upgrade overall

Is there no way to get a cheap lifetime license just for exemple for the current vgpu version / only one card and run with it ?

All thoughts were mainly founded on this video : https://youtu.be/_HNBLEW7DEE
Where he mentionned the license once but just the fact that he has one but not in a way that makes it a deterrent at leadt from my pov while continuing to talk about a good cheap alternative

if you have enough pci slots or it's only a few vms, the 'cheap' alternative is to use one dedicated gpu per vm, eg a quadro p400 (should also support h264/h265 encode/decode)

what exactly do you mean by that? what is it you use the vms for? if you use the built-in novnc console, try changing to spice or a remote desktop protocol from inside the vm

Just was planning on maybe juste having a bit more horsepower than the p400 knowing i migh play some light games later on the vm's
secondly they aint much cheaper thatn p4's at least from what i see on ebay
