Hello Community,

I'm seeking advice on my current home setup, which is configured as follows:

  • ISP/Internet -> Fibre/Media converter (Unsure of the propert term) -> Homelab (running Proxmox)
  • Proxmox -> pfSense -> Managed Switch -> Home Appliances

The Issue:

I'm facing a couple of challenges:

  1. Hostname Resolution:
Proxmox isn't resolving hostnames. I've checked my DNS settings but suspect the issue lies elsewhere—likely a configuration problem, as the VM running pfSense has connectivity.
  2. Firewall Configuration:
I've enabled the Datacenter firewall, but I'm uncertain if there's a default rule I need to modify.

The Dilemma:

I'm caught in a bit of a "chicken and egg" situation. I want my Proxmox instance to be protected by the pfSense firewall. However, since pfSense is running as a VM on Proxmox, putting it in front of Proxmox creates a circular dependency. This seems like it could be the best option to avoid configuring multiple firewalls, but I'm not sure how to implement it without causing issues.

Request for Help:

If anyone could offer some advice on how to set this up correctly, I would greatly appreciate it.

For context, my homelab has two Ethernet ports (one 1Gbps and one 2.5Gbps), and there's plenty of RAM and CPU available.

Thank you!
