[Q] Best practice for migrating VM from KVM to OpenVZ (Container)

Hello!

Is there a best practice available to execute the following task:
Migration of VM from KVM to OpenVZ (Container)

The VM is operated in Proxmox VE, and the new VM running in OpenVZ will be operated by Proxmox VE, too.

Hi,
there are no migration possible.
You have to install new and then restore your data.

In most ways a KVM machine behaves like any other physical server, so openvz migration can be done in the same way as you would do it for any other physical server.

I have used this process for some webservers etc. with success

As it is also stated in Einars link, we always use rsync or tar to simply copy the (offline) files and it works mostly out of the box without any changes, yet it depends heavily on your machine itself. If there is a hardcoded IP or hostname somewhere you have do perform additional changes.

Generally speaking, it is possible yet only for advanced users.
