PVE reinstallation without wiping local storage

We have a running PVE installation with separated local storage on 2x SSD (Hardware RAID1) for the OS installation and a second hardware RAID array (RAID 10) for all VM storage. Both RAID on the same controller.
This was installed about a year ago by a team member in a non-standard way (I believe Debian first, then PVE 5.2 on top).
A recent attempt to upgrade the OS to the latest version 5.4 failed and we must have taken wrong, manual steps so that we are in a position wanting to re-install the OS freshly (and then restore its former configuration, VMs, etc.)
During a fresh, standard PVE install onto the SSD RAID, can we be sure that the second RAID array with the VM storage will *not* be touched (formatted) in any way?
Thanks for any help.

I would recommend you to pull out these drives, then you are really secure.

But normally, if you don't select them, they will not touch.
