PVE Machine Versions

My VM's are on machine version 8.1

When I go into the Hardware option that there is 8.2 and 9.0 versions.

Where can I find information to learn about the differences and risks involved with changing these settings.

Furthermore, if a version upgrade does not work, can I downgrade?
