PVE and GNS3 - cloud connection

Wanted to ask if anyone could help shed some light on a setup of GNS3 as a VM in PVE.
Have the GNS3 server setup in PVE, client can connect and I have a switch configured with a number of endpoints for config verification. What I want to do is use the cloud connector to connect this switch to a separate PVE bridge to an OPNsense VM (LAN side).
second isolated bridge (vmbr1) is setup now, have it assigned as a 3rd nic to OPN and as a second nic to the GNS3 VM. from the console of both VM's I can ping each other just fine. In GSN3 I have tried adding all special nic options from eth0 and 1, vmbr1 and 1.nic. After making a new link using each available option, from within the GNS3 switch console I can't ping anything out of GNS3.
Since the VM shell instance can ping each other it's apparently obvious the two can talk. But I'm just at a roadblock on what might be preventing the GNS3 switch from being able to talk.
I've heard of people talk about hiccups with GNS3, so I'm hoping someone could give some info if I might need to tweak something in PVE or if this issue might be only in GNS3.

(overall scenario is I'm trying to mirror a physical switch enviro I have within PVE so I can test out OPNsense and get all the routing details and config worked out prior to replacing my Arista appliance. Switch stack talks fine to Arista now, so I'm trying to replicate the setup virtually to do the same in OPN but I can't get it to talk.)

Thank you
