Hi

I appreciate that opinions may differ but I was hoping to get some recommendations on how 'best' to partition Proxmox VE based on past experience. I'm new to Proxmox and still reading up on things so apologies if this is well documented already in the forum. I'll continue to search the threads.

I have a dedicated server with these basic specs:

32 GB Ram
2 x 480 SSD Hardware Raid 1
2 x 2TB HDD Hardware Raid 1

The use case will be web hosting and VPS offerings as a small addon to our existing business.

I'm quite happy with having my drives in Raid 1 just for the sake of sanity.

My questions are:

1) Which drive would be better to install Proxmox VE on? I've read HDD mentioned somewhere but wasn't sure as to exactly why.

2) And any suggestions on how to then divide up the rest of the space? VM's on HDD/SDD, webroots on HDD/SDD.

I plan on storing ISO's and doing local backups to the HDD.

Thanks in advance!

Use the SSD for the OS, also VMs/CTs that need higher IO speeds could fit on the SSD, for backups and ISO storage the HDDs are a good place. Also VMs/CTs with low IO demand could go there.

If you use a storage technology like ZFS or LVM then you have volumes that are created on either storage, separately to a filesystem.
