Proxmox VE Differential Backups for Proxmox 3.1

Hi to all,
probably you know that following to this link : http://ayufan.eu/projects/proxmox-ve-differential-backups/ you can download this free plugin for add differential backup ability to ours lovely proxmox, and this plugin is just ready for proxmox 3.1 !!!

it is a pity that Dietmar rejected this software because I have found it very useful ...

I hope that Dietmar could reconsider its position on this topic.

Having differential backups in Proxmox would be a great feature.

If performance was good (have not tested these patches) I would use it.

I use quite some time now on some of my machines and i like this patch.
Backups (atleast the ones done differential) are faster and take less space on my backup server.
So with this patch you can keep more backups with less space consumed.

Also the installation and configuration in the WebGUI afterwards is simple.

Must have. We will start using it as soon as it gets included in Proxmox. Let's hope that is soon. As it stands Proxmox's worst feature set is the backup's now (or the lack of thereof.)

Oh yes ! Differential backup in Proxmox would be a great feature !
I use this patch and works wery well.
BUT ... xdelta3 is very CPU intensive program, at the end, full backup and differential backup use the same time.
The real difference is the space used on backup storage (obviously).

I think it is important to add this feature, it will be up to the user to choose.

Ayufan has always been courteous ... +1 for upstream integration.

No, the speed of diff restore is lower than a simple full restore. The goal is the space reduction on storage backup, and is not little

I agree. This is a much needed option. Consider this scenario: I backup all my virtual machines and the backup is about 500 GB every day. And I also want to transport the
copy on a encrypted external drive to bring all data out of the house for security reasons. The copy job takes several hours even on a usb3 drive. A differental copy will greatly
reduce the size and the time it takes to move the copy to the drive.

I can also see other ways of transporting the data online to a backupserver on a different location. The diff file could then be merged together on the other side with the full copy
to keep the file intact. Checked at last with a crc test.

If the Proxmox team will not make it. We could make a backup product to replace the Proxmox backup system, like the situation in the Vmware world with Veeam.
